The Dolomites by camper or with a caravan: banned roads, limits and rules
Updated 20 October 2026
Which Dolomites roads ban or restrict motorhomes and caravans, where you can sleep, and how to plan a camper route without nasty surprises.
Most of the Dolomites works fine in a motorhome: the valley roads and the big passes are wide, and campsites are good. The trouble is a short list of roads that are banned, restricted or simply miserable in anything long or wide. We track 20 of them.
Roads with a ban, legal limits or a clear warning
| Road | Campers and trailers | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Alpe di Siusi road | Banned | Overnight parking and camping are prohibited on the Compatsch car parks. |
| Passo Gavia | Banned | Campers, caravans, buses and vehicles over 3.5 t are banned. |
| Passo del Rombo | Legal limits apply | Trailers over 4.5 m are banned. Motorhomes allowed up to 8 t, 2.55 m wide and 4 m high. Buses over 10 m banned. Restrictions are stricter on the Italian side. |
| Passo San Boldo | Legal limits apply | Height limit 3.2 m. Long motorhomes and caravans are not advised in the tunnel hairpins. |
| Staller Sattel | Legal limits apply | Maximum length 10 m and height 3 m (tunnel). Buses and campers need a special permit from the Pustertal road service (+39 0474 553065). Not for caravans. |
| Tre Cime toll road | Legal limits apply | Campers and caravans pay €60 (cars €40, motorbikes €26). Ticket valid 12 hours. |
| Monte Zoncolan road | Not advised | |
| Passo del Mortirolo | Not advised | |
| Passo del Vivione | Not advised | |
| Passo delle Erbe | Not advised | East side from San Martino open all year; the west side is usually open from May to November. |
| Passo dello Stelvio | Not advised | Opened on 22 May 2026; usually closes in early November. Closed to motor traffic on Stelvio Bike Day (late August). |
| Passo di Croce Domini | Not advised | |
| Passo Duran | Not advised | |
| Passo Manghen | Not advised | |
| Passo Nigra | Not advised | |
| Prato Piazza road | Not advised | Private cars are restricted during the day in summer; a shuttle bus runs from Ponticello. |
| San Pietro (Funes) to Würzjoch | Not advised | |
| Strada del Menador | Not advised | |
| Strada della Forra | Not advised | One-way uphill only since August 2025. |
| Val Genova road | Not advised | In summer, car access is limited and a shuttle bus runs from Carisolo. Check the park website. |
Only roads with an official source carry "banned" or "legal limits". The others are our own advice for vehicles longer than about 7 m.
Where you can and cannot sleep
- Parking is not camping. Under Italian law a motorhome may park wherever a car may, unless signs say otherwise. Camping behaviour outside campsites (levelling jacks, awning, chairs, waste water) is not allowed.
- Many Dolomites municipalities ban overnight parking for motorhomes at passes and popular car parks. Look for the sign with a crossed-out camper and a moon.
- Seiser Alm: sleeping in any vehicle is fined on the Alpe di Siusi and in the Sciliar-Catinaccio nature park, and parking is banned there from 23:00 to 5:00. Use the campsite at Fiè allo Sciliar (book ahead).
- Use aree di sosta and campsites. Most valleys have a paid motorhome area with water and dumping.
Famous spots that are awkward in a camper
- Tre Cime toll road: online booking only; motorhomes paid €60 in 2026 (cars €40).
- Alpe di Siusi road: no day driving to the plateau; take the cable car from Siusi.
- Staller Sattel: single lane with timed traffic lights, length and height limits.
- Passo del Rombo: limits on weight, width, height and trailers.
- Passo Gavia: campers, caravans and vehicles over 3.5 t are banned.
Driving tips for big vehicles
- On a narrow road, the vehicle going downhill gives way, but if someone must reverse, combinations and vehicles over 3.5 t have priority (art. 150). Still, stop early in a wide place: it is quicker for everyone.
- Go down in second or third gear. Brake fade in a 3.5 t motorhome after a long descent is real.
- Start early. Hairpins on the Sella group are fine at 8:00 and stressful at 11:00 with bikes and buses.
The route planner has a camper option that drops banned and not-advised roads and avoids roads with limits where it can.
